Two Street Racers Arrested After High-Speed BMW Crash Claims Life of Expectant Father

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — What began as a burst of late-night adrenaline on Interstate 10 turned into a devastating tragedy, claiming the life of 33-year-old Robert Espinoza, a father-to-be simply driving home.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, the fatal crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday near the 8700 block of I-10 East, just past North Foster Road. Investigators say two 20-year-olds, Kyle Jin Liu and Evan Moreno, were behind the wheels of a white BMW M4 and a BMW 3 Series, allegedly racing down the near-empty highway at dangerously high speeds.

As the cars rocketed eastbound toward Farm-to-Market 1516, Liu’s BMW clipped the rear end of Espinoza’s Nissan sedan, which was traveling lawfully ahead of them. The impact launched Espinoza’s car into the air, flipping it several times before coming to rest — a mangled shell of metal scattered across multiple lanes.

The force of the collision sent Liu’s M4 careening forward until it smashed into a concrete divider, while Moreno’s 3 Series sped away from the scene. Witnesses later described the crash as “violent beyond imagination,” with debris and smoke filling the roadway.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes. Espinoza was found critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. Paramedics worked tirelessly to stabilize him, but despite every effort, he passed away hours later due to the extent of his injuries.

Liu and Moreno were later arrested and charged with racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury, a charge that may be upgraded following Espinoza’s death. Both were released on bond Saturday while investigators examine dash-cam footage, surveillance videos, and vehicle black-box data to determine the precise speeds and movements leading up to the impact.

Police have since impounded both BMWs, which suffered extensive damage. They also confirmed that additional evidence, including social media posts and videos, may show the pair engaging in similar high-speed activity prior to the crash.

Espinoza’s family, meanwhile, is left shattered. Friends describe him as a hardworking man, devoted partner, and soon-to-be father, excited about welcoming his first child. His loved ones say he had been on his way home from work, planning for the future — a future now heartbreakingly stolen.

A family spokesperson shared, “Robert was everything you’d want in a son and partner. He was careful, loving, and full of hope for the baby on the way. Now, that baby will never get to meet their dad.”

Community members have expressed outrage over the incident, calling for stricter penalties for street racing — a dangerous trend that continues to claim innocent lives across Texas. In 2024 alone, police reported dozens of deaths tied to illegal racing events on major highways, many involving young drivers seeking online fame or adrenaline rushes.

As the investigation continues, San Antonio police are urging witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage from the area to come forward. “Every bit of evidence helps us piece together how this tragedy unfolded,” officials said.

For now, one family grieves an unimaginable loss — a father-to-be whose life was cut short by recklessness on the road. As flowers and candles pile up along the highway guardrail where the crash occurred, the message from loved ones is simple: No thrill is worth a life.
