“Spokane County, WA – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of Sergeant Kenneth Salas, who tragically lost his life while performing his duties on Interstate 90. The incident occurred on the morning of August 9, 2025, near the Four Lakes exit.

According to officials, Sgt. Salas, 59, was assisting with a large traffic hazard along the eastbound lanes at approximately 7:40 a.m. While managing the scene, he was struck by a passing motorist. Despite the immediate arrival of emergency personnel, his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Sgt. Salas dedicated 34 years of his life to serving the people of Spokane County. He began his career as a Corrections Officer before joining the Sheriff’s Office as a Patrol Deputy. His dedication and skill led him through several roles, including School Resource Deputy, member of the Traffic Unit, and part of the Emergency Operations Team.

His leadership qualities were recognized through promotions, first to Detective/Corporal in 2004 and later to Sergeant in 2009. In his most recent assignment, Sgt. Salas supervised the Downtown Dayshift Patrol, where he was known for his professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public safety.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Sgt. Salas served with distinction in the United States Air Force and the Washington State Air National Guard. Over more than two decades of military service, he rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant before retiring, earning the respect of his peers and superiors alike.

Colleagues describe Sgt. Salas as a mentor, a leader, and a dedicated public servant who consistently put the needs of others before his own. His calm demeanor and ability to connect with people from all walks of life left a lasting impression on the community he served.

The Washington State Patrol is leading the investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Officials have not released additional details about the driver involved, and no charges have been announced at this time. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution when approaching emergency or hazard scenes to prevent similar tragedies.

The loss of Sgt. Salas has deeply affected both the law enforcement community and local residents. Flags have been lowered to half-staff in his honor, and preparations are underway for a public memorial service that will allow the community to pay their respects.
