A quiet Monday morning turned into an active investigation after a man’s body was found in the New River near the Herbert G. “Buddy” Phillips Bridge in Onslow County, North Carolina. Authorities have now confirmed the identity of the deceased and are working to determine how he ended up in the river.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office reported that the body was discovered around 7:00 a.m. by a local fisherman. The individual had been casting lines in the river when he noticed something unusual floating several hundred yards upstream from the bridge. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a body and immediately contacted emergency services.
First responders and sheriff’s deputies quickly arrived on the scene and secured the area. The body was recovered from the river with assistance from local emergency personnel and water rescue teams. The identity of the man was later confirmed as Aaron Gage Stallings, a 29-year-old resident of Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of death, and an autopsy has been scheduled to provide further details. The sheriff’s office has not released any information suggesting foul play, but officials say all possibilities are being considered as part of the ongoing investigation.
The location where the body was found is a well-known area for fishing and boating, and the discovery has left local residents shocked and saddened. Many frequent the New River for recreation, and the bridge itself is a familiar landmark for those living in and around Jacksonville.
Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby areas and speaking with residents who may have been in the vicinity during the hours leading up to the discovery. They have also issued a public request for information, asking anyone who may have seen anything unusual in the area to contact the sheriff’s office.
So far, no personal belongings or vehicle have been linked to the victim at the scene, leading investigators to believe that the man may have entered the water some distance away. His last known whereabouts are still being confirmed.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is also coordinating with the medical examiner’s office and other local agencies to piece together a full timeline of events. The results of the autopsy are expected to provide more clarity on whether the death was accidental, natural, or involved outside factors.
As the investigation continues, local authorities have assured the public that there is no immediate danger to the community. They encourage residents to come forward with any tips that might assist in determining how Stallings ended up in the river.
