Montgomery, Alabama — The downtown area of Montgomery was the scene of a tragic mass shooting late Saturday night, leaving two people dead and twelve others injured, including two juveniles. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred near Bibb Street and Commerce Street around 11:30 p.m., a bustling area of the city that had been hosting several major events.
Among the fatalities, one victim, a woman identified by her family as Renee, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim has been confirmed as Lï Trappski. Both were remembered by friends and relatives as kind, community-minded individuals whose lives were abruptly and tragically cut short by the violence.
The twelve surviving victims include three individuals, among them one juvenile, who remain in life-threatening condition. The nine other victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Medical teams responded rapidly to provide urgent care, and several victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Montgomery Police Department (MPD) officers were dispatched immediately after multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire. Upon arrival, police found the chaotic scene with victims suffering from gunshot wounds, and witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots in a crowded area. Investigators quickly secured the scene and began collecting evidence.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed condemned the attack as “reckless and selfish,” emphasizing the danger posed to bystanders. “To have a heinous event like this take place prior to midnight in a busy part of our entertainment district is reckless and selfish,” Reed said. He criticized the actions of the perpetrators, highlighting the senseless risk to innocent lives.
Police Chief Jim Graboys assured the public that MPD will devote all available resources to apprehend those responsible. “This is not acceptable. This is not normal. We will not rest until we put the people involved in jail,” he stated. Graboys noted that the shooting appeared to stem from a confrontation between two groups rather than a random attack.
Authorities confirmed that police units were stationed within 50 feet of both sides of the scene when the shooting erupted, underscoring the audacity of the attackers. Mayor Reed vowed that once suspects are captured, they will “be made an example of,” reflecting the city’s commitment to justice and public safety.
The incident occurred during a busy night in downtown Montgomery, coinciding with major events including the Tuskegee–Morehouse Classic, the Alabama National Fair, and Alabama State University’s homecoming celebrations. Thousands of residents and visitors were in the area, heightening the potential for mass casualties.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall issued a statement offering condolences to the victims’ families while expressing concern over ongoing violence in the city. “My deepest sympathies go out to all those affected by this senseless act,” he said, adding that the tragedy underscores a growing crisis in Montgomery.
MPD confirmed that multiple individuals have been brought in for questioning, though it is unclear whether they are considered suspects. Investigators have recovered several firearms believed to have been used in the shooting, some equipped with high-capacity magazines. Detectives continue to review witness statements, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence as they pursue leads to bring those responsible to justice.
