Laron Harrison, 38, Fatally Shot in the Back Inside Northview Heights Home Before Dawn; Police Respond to ShotSpotter Alert on Hazlett Street, Discover Victim Unresponsive—No Suspects or Motive Identified as Family and Community Mourn in Silence
In the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025, the quiet of Pittsburgh’s Northview Heights neighborhood was shattered by gunfire. At approximately 12:50 a.m., the city’s ShotSpotter system detected multiple gunshots in the 100 block of Hazlett Street. Responding officers from the Pittsburgh Police Department arrived swiftly at the scene, a residential home nestled within the public housing complex.
Inside, they found 38-year-old Laron Harrison lying on the floor, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his back. Despite immediate efforts by emergency medical services, Harrison was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Community in Mourning
Neighbors described Harrison as a quiet and respectful individual, often seen helping others in the community. “He was always lending a hand, whether it was carrying groceries or just checking in on folks,” said Denise Johnson, a longtime resident of Northview Heights. “It’s heartbreaking to think someone would do this to him.”
The Northview Heights neighborhood, established in the late 1950s as a public housing project, has faced challenges over the years, including periods of increased violence. However, residents have been working diligently to foster a sense of community and safety.
Investigation Ongoing
The Pittsburgh Police Department’s Violent Crime Unit has taken over the investigation. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby security cameras.
