Fort Stewart Shooting Leaves Five Soldiers Injured as Authorities Investigate Motive Behind Sudden Gunfire Incident
FORT STEWART, GA — August 6, 2025 — A disturbing scene unfolded at Fort Stewart on Wednesday morning when five soldiers were injured during an unexpected gunfire incident inside one of the U.S. Army’s largest military installations. The event triggered an immediate response from base security and local law enforcement.
The incident occurred within the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex, a key unit within Fort Stewart located southwest of Savannah, Georgia. According to officials, the first reports of gunfire were received at 10:56 a.m., prompting a lockdown and a swift emergency protocol activation.
The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Sgt. Quornelius Radford, an active-duty automated logistics specialist. He was taken into custody without resistance by 11:35 a.m., less than an hour after the shooting began. Authorities confirmed that he used a personally owned handgun and not a military-issued weapon in the incident.
All five individuals injured in the shooting were fellow soldiers. They received initial treatment at the scene before being transported to Winn Army Community Hospital. Three of the five victims required surgical intervention and were later moved to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for further treatment. As of the latest update, all are in stable condition and expected to recover.
Officials have not released the names of the wounded, citing the importance of notifying family members first. The ages and ranks of the victims have also not been disclosed, though military sources noted they were all members of the same brigade as the suspect.
Military representatives stressed that this was an isolated act and there is currently no indication of any links to terrorism or extremist ideologies. They also confirmed that Sgt. Radford had not been deployed to combat and had no known history of radical affiliations.
It was revealed during the press briefing that Radford had a prior arrest in May for driving under the influence. However, the nature of any disciplinary measures taken by the military following that arrest has not yet been clarified. Authorities have not confirmed whether this played any role in Wednesday’s events.
The FBI is now involved in the ongoing investigation alongside Army Criminal Investigation Division personnel. Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the act, with officials urging the public and media not to speculate until verified findings are released.
Fort Stewart leadership expressed their gratitude for the rapid response from emergency teams and base security personnel. They also emphasized their continued support for the soldiers who were injured, offering counseling services and medical assistance to those affected by the incident.
As law enforcement processes the scene and interviews additional witnesses, the installation remains secure, and normal operations have resumed under heightened awareness. Military officials have committed to transparency and will release additional updates as the investigation develops.
