CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. —

At approximately 8:18 a.m., deputies from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a major crash on Ball Ground Highway, just west of Fate Conn Road. Emergency personnel rushed to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a violent collision between two vehicles.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a BMW SUV traveling on Ball Ground Highway crossed the center line for unknown reasons. The vehicle then struck an oncoming Ford Mustang in a head-on impact, causing severe damage to both cars and leading to a full shutdown of the roadway during the investigation.
The driver of the Ford Mustang, identified as 18-year-old Luke Burgess of Canton, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Authorities say he sustained fatal injuries upon impact and was unable to be revived despite rapid emergency response.
The driver of the BMW SUV, 67-year-old Frank Coe, also of Canton, was transported to Kennestone Hospital in critical condition. Medical teams worked to stabilize him; however, he later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The community has been left in deep sorrow over the loss of both individuals.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the BMW to veer out of its lane. There is no indication at this point of weather playing a role, and authorities have not announced whether impairment or distraction is suspected. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident, and additional findings are expected as the case develops.
News of the crash has rippled across Canton, where both victims were known members of the local community. Friends, family, and neighbors have expressed grief and shared fond memories of the two men, noting their presence, character, and impact on those around them.
Officials have asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the crash to come forward. Any additional information could assist investigators in piecing together the final moments before the tragic incident.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the families of both victims. Crisis support services have been made available for those affected, including classmates, colleagues, and neighbors, as the community begins to process the loss.
