ALGARY, Alberta — It is with deep sorrow that the passing of Janice Paskey is announced on August 9, 2025, at the age of 62. Known for her unwavering commitment to family, friends, and the communities she served, Janice left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, on November 8, 1962, Janice was the daughter of Arlene and Peter Paskey. Her early years shaped her love for learning and community, which she carried throughout her life. She pursued higher education at Carleton University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.
Janice’s career began to flourish in the media world, where she made her mark during the 1990s as editor of the McGill News Alumni Magazine in Montreal. Her leadership and editorial skills quickly earned respect among colleagues and readers alike.
In 1998, Janice and her family relocated to Calgary, where she took on the role of editor at Avenue Magazine. Though successful in publishing, Janice discovered her true passion in education. For 17 years, she was a beloved member of Mount Royal University’s journalism faculty, shaping the minds and careers of countless students.
Colleagues remember Janice as an inspiring educator with a sharp intellect and a nurturing presence. Her dedication to teaching, editing, and mentoring contributed profoundly to Canadian journalism’s future, earning her admiration and affection from students and staff.
Outside the classroom, Janice was a passionate volunteer who generously gave her time to causes she cared deeply about. Her compassion and fierce loyalty were hallmarks of her character, guiding her in both personal and professional spheres.
Janice is survived by her husband, Marc Coyte; her sons, Adam and Matthew Paskey-Coyte, along with his partner Daphnée Chouinard; her sister, Gail Paskey; cousin Cindy Paskey; and her mother, Arlene Paskey. She was preceded in death by her father, Peter Paskey. Those who loved her treasure her strength, kindness, and the deep love she shared.
The family expresses profound gratitude to the healthcare professionals in Calgary and Edmonton who provided exceptional care during Janice’s illness. Their dedication was a source of comfort in challenging times.
A Catholic Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Foster’s Garden Chapel in Calgary, honoring Janice’s remarkable life and legacy.
Janice Paskey’s spirit of integrity, compassion, and dedication will continue to inspire her family, friends, students, and community for years to come. Her legacy remains a testament to a life well-lived and deeply cherished.
