Baltimore Neighborhood Gathering Turns Violent as Gunfire Wounds Six, Including Young Child in Attendance

BALTIMORE, MD — A community celebration in Baltimore took a devastating turn Saturday night when gunfire erupted, leaving six people wounded, including a 5-year-old girl. The unsettling incident unfolded shortly before 8:50 p.m. near the intersection of Spaulding and Queensberry Avenues, an area usually known for its vibrant neighborhood gatherings.

Authorities reported that several residents had gathered outdoors to enjoy a communal crab feast, a cherished local tradition, when the peaceful evening was shattered by the sudden sound of gunfire. Witnesses described the moment as chaotic, with people scrambling for cover while others rushed to help the injured.

According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the gunfire came without warning from an unknown suspect. Early reports suggest that the shooter fled the scene immediately after the incident, leaving behind a scene of shock and confusion. Police have not yet released details about a possible motive or suspect description.

Among the six victims was a 5-year-old girl who sustained a gunshot wound to her hand. “Thankfully, her injury does not appear to be life-threatening,” Commissioner Worley said. “However, the fact that such a young child was hurt is deeply disturbing to us all.” The child was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover physically.

The other five victims, all adults, suffered various injuries and were also taken to nearby hospitals. Their conditions have not been disclosed at this time, but officials confirmed that none of the injuries appear to be immediately life-threatening.

Police cordoned off the area overnight as investigators collected shell casings, documented the scene, and canvassed for witnesses. Detectives are reviewing security camera footage from nearby homes and businesses, hoping to identify the shooter and determine whether the attack was targeted or random.

Local residents expressed a mix of grief and frustration at the violence. Several neighbors said the community has worked hard to build a sense of unity, hosting regular block gatherings to strengthen ties. “This was supposed to be a happy night,” one resident said. “Now everyone is scared and wondering who would do this.”

City officials, including members of the Baltimore City Council, condemned the violence and emphasized the urgent need for continued investment in community safety programs. They urged residents to cooperate with the investigation by sharing any relevant information or video evidence with the police.

Community leaders have announced plans for a neighborhood vigil to support the victims and their families. The gathering will also serve as a call for peace and solidarity in the face of ongoing gun violence in the city.

As of Sunday morning, the Baltimore Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact detectives or submit anonymous tips through the city’s crime hotline. Authorities remain determined to bring the suspect to justice and restore a sense of safety to the neighborhood.
