Augusta, Georgia Incident Involving Waynesboro Man With Prior DUI Ends in Multiple Downtown Vehicle Collisions

Augusta, Georgia — Downtown Augusta witnessed a tense and chaotic scene Thursday night when a Waynesboro man with a prior DUI history was arrested after allegedly striking multiple vehicles and attempting to flee law enforcement. The disturbance unfolded along some of the city’s busiest streets, drawing significant attention from both motorists and pedestrians.

Authorities reported that the suspect, a 30-year-old Waynesboro resident, was driving a black Jeep when the collisions occurred. The vehicle sustained extensive front-end damage, suggesting multiple impacts before it came to a stop. Witnesses recounted seeing the Jeep weaving erratically through traffic moments before the incident escalated into a foot chase.

Law enforcement officials stated that deputies attempted a routine traffic stop before the suspect suddenly accelerated in reverse down Ellis Street for nearly an entire block. The unexpected maneuver startled nearby drivers and pedestrians, prompting immediate pursuit. Officers quickly engaged, but the suspect abandoned the damaged vehicle and fled on foot toward Broad Street.

Multiple witnesses captured cellphone footage of the pursuit, some of which circulated widely on social media. In several clips, deputies can be seen chasing the man before tackling him to the ground in a dramatic takedown. Witness accounts suggested that a taser was deployed to subdue him during the arrest.

One bystander described the atmosphere as tense but orderly, noting that deputies worked quickly to secure the suspect while ensuring bystanders were moved to safety. The arrest occurred shortly after 10 p.m., a time when downtown Augusta is typically filled with people enjoying restaurants, shops, and nightlife venues.

Photographs shared online show the suspect’s black Jeep with its hood crumpled and front bumper partially detached. Nearby vehicles appeared to have sustained varying degrees of damage, though no serious injuries were immediately reported among other motorists. Authorities are still assessing the total number of vehicles involved in the chain of collisions.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the suspect has a documented history of impaired driving offenses. He now faces multiple charges, including reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, attempting to elude law enforcement, and suspected driving under the influence. Officials emphasized that his prior record will be considered as the investigation proceeds.

Residents and business owners in the area expressed both shock and concern following the incident. Many noted that the busy downtown streets could have resulted in a far more severe outcome, especially given the presence of pedestrians and outdoor diners during the summer evening.

Law enforcement agencies are urging anyone who witnessed the events or has additional footage to come forward. They believe that community cooperation will help ensure a thorough investigation and hold the suspect fully accountable for his actions.

The suspect remains in custody as of Friday morning. Court appearances are expected in the coming days, and authorities say further charges could be added as the investigation develops. Downtown Augusta continues to operate normally, though the damaged vehicles and online footage serve as stark reminders of the night’s dangerous events.
