Chicago – A 35-year-old man was shot by police Thursday after allegedly fleeing officers while armed with a handgun on the city’s South Side, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred in the 0-100 block of West 111th Place in the Roseland neighborhood, sparking an immediate police response.
According to Chicago Police Department reports, officers attempted to stop the man in connection with a recent string of armed robberies. When approached, he allegedly refused orders to drop his weapon and began running from the officers.
During the pursuit, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect in the leg. Emergency medical personnel responded quickly, transporting the man to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
The suspect now faces multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer, two counts of possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, and an ordinance violation. Police said these charges reflect the severity of the confrontation and the potential threat posed during the incident.
The two officers involved were also taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, though neither sustained injuries. Authorities emphasized that the use of force followed department protocols, given the presence of a firearm and the suspect’s noncompliance with commands.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has opened an independent investigation into the shooting, as mandated in officer-involved incidents. COPA investigators are reviewing body camera footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence to determine whether the shooting was justified.
Neighbors in Roseland expressed shock and concern following the event, describing the area as normally quiet. Residents said the presence of armed suspects in the neighborhood is alarming, and they praised the officers for acting to prevent potential harm to the public.
Local community leaders have called for calm while investigations proceed, stressing the importance of due process for both the suspect and law enforcement. They encouraged residents to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading unverified reports that could inflame tensions.
Legal experts note that cases involving police shootings often require careful examination of circumstances, including the suspect’s actions, the officer’s threat assessment, and compliance with departmental use-of-force policies. The pending COPA investigation will provide an official determination.
Authorities urge anyone with additional information about the suspect or the events leading up to the shooting to come forward. Community cooperation is crucial for law enforcement and oversight agencies to fully understand the sequence of events and ensure accountability for all involved.
