WICHITA, Kan. — Police confirmed Tuesday that an 18-year-old driver who was injured in a crash in northeast Wichita last week has died. Authorities said the teenager succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident several days after being transported to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the Wichita Police Department, the crash occurred late last week near the intersection of East 29th Street North and North Hillside, an area that has seen several recent traffic incidents. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle that had veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Investigators believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle lost control. The impact caused significant damage to the car, trapping the driver inside. Firefighters and paramedics worked quickly to extricate the teenager using specialized rescue equipment before rushing them to a nearby hospital.

At the time of the crash, no other vehicles were directly involved, police said. Investigators are still determining whether other factors, such as road conditions, distracted driving, or impairment, played a role in the collision. Witnesses told officers they heard a loud crash and saw smoke rising from the vehicle moments later.

Police noted that the area where the accident occurred is well lit but has a sharp curve that has been the site of previous crashes. Residents living nearby have expressed concern about speeding vehicles along that stretch of road, urging city officials to consider additional safety measures, such as speed bumps or improved signage.

Following the crash, the 18-year-old was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where they remained in critical condition for several days. Despite extensive medical efforts, the teenager died from their injuries earlier this week. Family members were notified shortly afterward, and the police have expressed condolences on behalf of the department.

Authorities said the incident serves as a tragic reminder of how quickly accidents can turn deadly, particularly for young and inexperienced drivers. Wichita Police encouraged motorists to slow down, wear seat belts, and remain attentive while behind the wheel. They added that speed continues to be one of the leading causes of fatal crashes in Sedgwick County.

Traffic investigators are continuing to analyze data from the crash, including evidence from the scene and potential surveillance footage from nearby businesses. A full report will be forwarded to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.

Community members have since taken to social media to express sympathy and support for the teenager’s family. Several classmates and friends shared memories and messages of condolence, describing the young driver as kind-hearted and full of potential.

Police say no further information will be released until the investigation concludes. The Wichita Police Department urges anyone with additional information or footage related to the crash to contact the traffic investigations section or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
