Crawford County, Missouri — A devastating head-on collision Wednesday afternoon on Highway C has left a 91-year-old woman from Cuba dead and another driver seriously injured. The tragic accident occurred about one mile west of Gerth Road at approximately 4:45 p.m., shocking the local community.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the collision happened when a 2020 Cadillac Escalade, driven eastbound by a 61-year-old man from Bourbon, crossed the centerline of the two-lane roadway for reasons still under investigation. The Escalade struck a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van traveling westbound and operated by the elderly Cuba woman.
The impact was severe, leaving both vehicles with catastrophic damage. First responders from multiple agencies, including North Crawford Ambulance, quickly arrived at the scene. Their immediate priority was to assess injuries and provide urgent medical attention to those involved.
Authorities confirmed that the 91-year-old driver of the Chrysler van suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of her family. The driver of the Escalade sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Washington. His current medical condition has not been disclosed.
Given the severity of the crash, the MSHP Crash Reconstruction Team was called in to investigate. Specialists spent hours collecting evidence, documenting the positions of the vehicles, and analyzing debris patterns to piece together what happened in the moments before impact.
Highway C was closed in both directions for several hours as investigators worked. The closure also allowed for the safe removal of wreckage from the roadway. Traffic was rerouted onto nearby rural roads, causing minor delays for drivers traveling through the area.
