Ector County Crash Claims Life of Andrews Man and Leaves Three Others with Serious Injuries
ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — A devastating two-vehicle collision in Ector County has left an Andrews man deceased and three others injured, prompting a thorough investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The incident occurred Friday evening on U.S. Highway 385, a route frequently traveled by commercial and passenger vehicles.
Authorities reported the crash happened around 7:15 p.m. near mile marker 342. Preliminary findings indicate that 22-year-old Carlos Ramos of Amarillo was operating a 2015 Peterbilt truck with a trailer, heading north in the outside lane. A sudden front left tire failure caused him to lose control.
Following the blowout, investigators say Ramos veered across the median into oncoming traffic, entering the southbound lanes while still traveling north. This unexpected maneuver placed him directly in the path of a southbound vehicle, creating a highly dangerous situation for all motorists in the vicinity.
The southbound vehicle, carrying multiple passengers including the Andrews man, was unable to avoid impact. The collision resulted in severe damage to both vehicles and significant debris scattered across the highway, leading to a temporary road closure as emergency crews worked at the scene.
First responders from multiple agencies, including DPS troopers, local law enforcement, fire rescue teams, and emergency medical personnel, arrived within minutes. Despite their rapid response, one male passenger from Andrews was pronounced deceased at the scene due to the extent of his injuries.
Three other individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly released, but officials confirmed that their injuries were considered serious. Hospital staff are working closely with families as they provide updates on recovery progress.
The DPS investigation is ongoing, with troopers examining the cause of the tire blowout and reviewing mechanical maintenance records for the Peterbilt truck. They are also analyzing roadway conditions, vehicle speeds, and any potential contributing factors such as driver fatigue or mechanical faults.
Local residents have expressed shock and sadness over the crash, noting that U.S. Highway 385 has seen several serious accidents in recent years. Some community members are calling for additional safety measures, including improved barriers in the median to prevent cross-lane collisions.
Authorities are reminding all drivers, especially those operating large commercial vehicles, to conduct thorough pre-trip inspections and ensure tire integrity. Tire blowouts at highway speeds can have catastrophic consequences, as demonstrated by this incident.
As the investigation continues, the community of Andrews is mourning the loss of one of its own, while keeping the injured in their thoughts and prayers. Officials urge anyone with information or dashcam footage from the scene to contact DPS to assist in the ongoing case.
