Memphis Manhunt Ends After Jackson Resident Ricardo Contreras Mendoza Helps Capture Armed Fugitive Safely
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE — A weeklong manhunt for a suspect accused of a horrific crime in Lake County came to a close Tuesday morning after a resident of Jackson, Tennessee, played a critical role in the suspect’s safe apprehension. The fugitive, identified as Austin Drummond, had been the focus of an intense, multi-agency search effort since August 1.
Ricardo Contreras Mendoza, a local resident, is being recognized by law enforcement officials for his pivotal role in spotting and detaining the suspect. Authorities have not yet released specific details of the moment of capture but confirmed that Mendoza’s actions were instrumental in ending the search without further violence.
The incident began when four individuals were found deceased in a Lake County home on August 1, prompting the launch of a statewide search. Drummond, the main suspect in the case, had remained at large for several days, prompting concern and fear across multiple communities.
The manhunt intensified over the weekend, particularly in the Jackson area, after Drummond’s abandoned vehicle was found nearby. That discovery led investigators to believe he was hiding somewhere in the local vicinity, prompting daily updates, increased patrols, and surveillance efforts.
A critical development occurred Sunday night when a home security camera captured footage of Drummond walking along Pipkin Road. In the video, he appeared dressed in camouflage, carrying a backpack, and armed with a rifle. At one point, he was seen attempting to enter a residence, escalating concerns about the threat he posed.
As sightings increased, local law enforcement issued a public safety alert early Tuesday morning. Residents near Saddlebrook Drive and Bridlepath Drive were told to shelter in place, lock their doors, and avoid outdoor activity while officers combed the neighborhood.
Additional roads in the Pleasant Plains and Country Club areas were blocked off as tactical teams worked to contain the area and locate the suspect. Union University also entered a temporary lockdown Monday as authorities responded to potential sightings and tips.
Law enforcement has since confirmed that it was Mendoza who spotted Drummond and took quick action to safely detain him until police arrived. While the specific encounter has not yet been detailed, officials praised Mendoza’s bravery and awareness, which helped prevent any further risk to the public.
