North Omaha, Nebraska: Chance McCowin, 22, Dies After Violence Erupts During Native Omaha Days Event
OMAHA, Neb. — A community celebration in North Omaha turned tragic early Monday morning after an act of violence left three individuals injured and one of them later pronounced deceased. The incident occurred near North 24th Street and Patrick Avenue, an area that had been hosting festivities related to Native Omaha Days.
The Omaha Police Department has identified the deceased individual as 22-year-old Chance McCowin. Officers responded to reports of gunfire just after midnight, arriving on the scene to find multiple victims with injuries. The area, previously filled with music, dancing, and community members, quickly turned into an active crime scene.
Investigators say the incident stemmed from a physical altercation that escalated into gunfire. While specific details regarding the cause of the confrontation remain under investigation, authorities are focusing on identifying all those involved and recovering any relevant evidence from the scene.
Emergency personnel responded promptly, transporting three victims to a nearby hospital. Sadly, McCowin succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced deceased by medical staff. The other two individuals, identified by police as 32-year-old Dontavis Montgomery and 24-year-old Tai’Jianea Henderson, are currently listed in stable condition and are expected to recover.
Captain Ken Fox of the Omaha Police Department addressed the public in a media briefing held near the scene. He stressed the importance of community awareness and urged families to check in with loved ones attending large gatherings, especially in the late-night hours. “If your loved ones are down here, tell your loved ones to go home. Make sure your loved ones are home,” Fox stated.
Authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with the incident. The investigation remains active, and law enforcement officials are urging witnesses to come forward with any video footage, photos, or firsthand accounts that could assist in identifying those responsible.
Native Omaha Days, a biennial celebration that highlights African American heritage and history in Omaha, typically draws large crowds from both inside and outside the city. The event is known for its positive energy and sense of unity, making Monday’s violence especially devastating for residents and attendees.
Community leaders are expressing concern about the safety of public events and are urging city officials to work with law enforcement and organizers to strengthen security measures. Some residents have already begun gathering in prayer vigils to support the victims and their families.
